Top Ten Mistakes Leaders Make

Marvin's book summary

The Top Ten Mistakes Leaders Make

By Hans Finzel

All leaders are subject to mistakes that can limit their effectiveness.

1) The top-down attitude

Knowledge is power and some leaders like to control the                      organization's knowledge.

The proper orientation will be determined by the situation.

Jesus was a servant leader, and sets the model for our leadership.

2) Putting paperwork before peoplework

  People are opportunities, not interruptions.

The greater the leadership role, the less time there seems to be for         people.

Only through association is there information.

3) The absence of affirmation

Everyone thrives on affirmation and praise. Thank people publicly.

Affirmation doesn't last. It has to be replenished.

4) No room for mavericks

Mavericks can save us from the slide toward institutionalism.

Large organizations usually kill off mavericks before they can take         root.

Learn to recognize useful mavericks who care for the goals of the          organization.

5) Dictatorship in decision-making

Dictators deny the value of individuals. “Flat” organizations are the         future.

The one who does the job should decide how it is done.

6) Dirty delegation

Overmanaging is a cardinal sin of poor leadership.

Delegation should match each worker's follow-through ability.

7) Communication chaos

The bigger the group, the more attention must be given to                       communication.

When left in the dark, people tend to dream up wild rumors.

8) Missing the clues of corporate culture

Cultivating and changing the culture should be one of leadership's top      priorities.

Learn to respect values different from your own.

9) Success without successors

Finishing well is an important measure of success in leadership.

Mentoring is a non-negotiable function of successful leadership.

10) Failure to focus on the future

Leadership visions are snapshots of the future.

The key to life is concentration and elimination.

  Perform a vision audit.
